Vineyard and terroir
Vigna Casi is a single-vineyard wine from the Casi subzone. Its Sangiovese comes from several small parcels planted between 1998 and 2000 at a density of 5,000 vines per hectare and trained to Guyot. The yield is 45 quintals of grapes per hectare. Clay forms the basis of the soils, with sandstone prevailing on the west-facing slope and galestro on the east-facing side.
Grapes
100% Sangiovese.
Vinification
The clusters are selected in the vineyard and harvested by hand. After destemming and crushing, the must ferments at controlled temperature. Once alcoholic fermentation is complete, the wine remains in contact with the skins for approximately 15–20 days. It is then racked into concrete tanks for settling and the start of malolactic fermentation.
Ageing
The wine matures for 27 months. One portion rests in 30 hl Slavonian oak casks, another in 50 hl French oak casks, and a small final portion in tonneaux. The allocation among the different vessels reflects the qualities of fruit from the vineyard's individual parcels.
Tasting profile
The technical profile emphasizes pepper, oriental spices and ripe red fruit. The palate is round and firm, supported by substantial yet non-aggressive tannins, with a very long, intense finish. The broader description adds a ruby colour that develops garnet reflections with age, alongside violet, cherry and woodland-fruit aromas and further spice. The texture is rounded, velvety and elegant.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 18 °C. Pair with first courses dressed with meat or game ragù and with mature Tuscan cheeses such as pecorino.
