Vineyard and terroir

This estate cru draws on selected older, favourably exposed vineyards in the Pietrafitta and Canale area of Castellina in Chianti, with the vineyard specification identifying Casanuova di Pietrafitta. Pietrafitta lies in the upper part of Castellina at approximately 530 m a.s.l. The north-eastern site is cooler and well ventilated, encouraging even ripening. Surrounding woodland helps preserve biodiversity and shelters the vines.

The medium-textured soils contain clay and abundant stony material characteristic of the Alberese area. The technical specifications give vine ages of 10–35 years, while the introductory description places the average at approximately 20 years. Planting density is 5,000 vines per hectare and average yield is 1 kg per vine. Spur and cane pruning are both practised.

Grapes

Sangiovese with Canaiolo and Malvasia Nera.

Vinification

Harvest takes place during the first half of October. Maceration lasts approximately 10–12 days at about 28°C, and malolactic fermentation is completed in stainless steel.

Ageing

Maturation comprises at least 15 months in traditional Chianti barrels and tonneaux, followed by at least six months in stainless steel and at least one year in bottle.

Technical data

Annual production is approximately 20,000 bottles.

Tasting profile

Deep red in colour. The complex, refined aromatic profile moves gradually from fruit toward spices and liquorice. The palate is substantial, harmonious and dense, finishing with persistent aromatic length.

Serving and pairing

Serve at 16°C with substantial roasts, game or mature cheeses.
