Vineyard and terroir
Vigna Trebbio is a cru in the Meleto subzone, at 380–420 metres with southern and eastern exposures. The soil is predominantly clay, with substantial red sand in the northeast and an increasing presence of alberese toward the south. Sangiovese shares the vineyard with Ciliegiolo and Colorino vines, local varieties traditionally used in Chianti Classico blends and retained here as part of the estate's viticultural biodiversity.
Grapes
Sangiovese.
Vinification
Bunches are selected in the vineyard and harvested by hand, then destemmed and crushed. Fermentation takes place at controlled temperature. Following alcoholic fermentation, the wine remains in contact with the skins for approximately 15–20 days. It is then racked into concrete tanks to settle, where malolactic fermentation subsequently begins.
Ageing
The wine matures for 27 months in 30 hl French-oak casks.
Tasting profile
Ruby red, developing garnet reflections with age. The bouquet combines ripe red fruit and sour cherry with spices and aromatic herbs. The palate is rounded and velvety, with direct but non-aggressive tannins and a long, flavourful finish. Its profile balances power with elegance and develops further with ageing.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 18°C. Its freshness suits rich meat dishes, as well as soft cheeses and mature cheeses of moderate intensity.
Label / history
Trebbio became Castello di Meleto's third Chianti Classico Gran Selezione, created to express another distinct interpretation of Sangiovese within the estate.
