Vineyard and terroir
The Syrah is grown in Sulcis, southwestern Sardinia. Cantina Mesa’s 100 ha of vineyards are located at Porto Pino. The Mediterranean climate combines low, unevenly distributed rainfall with high spring and summer temperatures; winters may be cold and dry or mild. The naturally rich, medium-textured soils comprise sand and calcareous clay and have a good mineral supply.
Grapes
In some years, Carignano is added to the Syrah.
Vinification
The Syrah is harvested during the first half of September. The wine macerates on the skins for 15 days at 24–26 °C, before undergoing malolactic fermentation in oak barriques.
Ageing
The wine ages for 12 months in oak barriques, followed by maturation in concrete tanks. After bottling, it rests in the winery’s cellars for at least six months.
Label / history
“Mesa” means “dining table” in Sardinian and Spanish and represents a philosophy centred on food, feasts, maternal love, simplicity and aromas. Cantina Mesa was founded by Gavino Sanna and Giuseppe Mele out of a love for Sardinia and its culture. Its minimalist building has a white façade decorated with motifs inspired by traditional Sardinian carpet patterns. Designed by Sanna, these motifs also appear on every Cantina Mesa bottle.
