Questo vino
Vineyard and terroir
The estate’s 100 ha of vineyards lie among the hills of Porto Pino in southern Sardinia.
Vinification
The Cannonau was harvested by hand during the first ten days of October. After destemming and crushing, the juice was transferred by gravity to fermenters on the cellar’s lower level. Maceration and fermentation took place at 24–26 °C.
Ageing
The wine rested for several months on fine lees in stainless-steel tanks, followed by two months in bottle.
Tasting profile
Bright fruit and berry notes appear on both the nose and palate. The wine is well structured.
Vintage notes
Italy’s 2012 harvest was among the smallest in recent decades, although Sardinia’s crop was roughly in line with the previous vintage. In the south of the island, plentiful winter and spring rainfall provided sufficient soil-moisture reserves and supported even flowering and budbreak. Dry conditions in June, August heat and wide differences between daytime and nighttime temperatures in September helped the grapes ripen fully.
Label / history
In Sardinian and Spanish, “Mesa” literally means “dining table.” Cantina Mesa was founded by designer Gavino Sanna and Giuseppe Mele. Sanna also designed the traditional Sardinian carpet-inspired motifs that decorate the winery’s white façade and appear on every Cantina Mesa bottle.
