Vineyard and terroir
The Sangiovese is grown in the Pian di Rota, Romana and Castello vineyards. The 25-year-old vines stand on southeast- and southwest-facing slopes at 250 m above sea level.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested during the first ten days of September, carefully sorted and gently pressed at the winery. Fermentation lasts about one week in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks, followed by 10–15 days of post-fermentation maceration.
Ageing
The wine matures for 36 months in 60 hL oak casks, followed by six months in bottle.
Vintage notes
The 2017 growing season was unusually warm and dry. A mild winter brought above-average temperatures and little rainfall, prompting an early budbreak, while warm, dry conditions in March accelerated the growing cycle. Temperatures fell to almost 0 °C in late April without damaging the vines. Flowering ended in June under favourable conditions, followed by a dry July and August with above-average temperatures. Yields were slightly below normal, but the harvested grapes were notably healthy and reached an ideal level of ripeness. The vintage was expected to reach its full potential from 2023 to 2027.
