Vineyard and terroir
Nebbiolo comes from the Barolo DOCG area. The vineyard lies at 310 m above sea level with southern exposure. Its geological base is the S. Agata fossil formation: grey-blue marls with varying proportions of sand and local sandy-conglomeratic intercalations. The hillside soil is a fine, calcareous Typic Ustorthent.
The vines were planted in 1982 at a density of 4,200 plants per hectare. They are trellised and Guyot-pruned. Grape yield is 8,000 kg/ha, corresponding to a wine yield of 5,200 L/ha.
Grapes
100% Nebbiolo. This late-ripening variety is harvested between late September and the first ten days of October.
Vinification
The grapes are destemmed and crushed, then fermented in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks for at least one week at 28–30°C. After racking, the wine remains on its lees for at least two months at 20–22°C while malolactic fermentation is completed.
Ageing
Refinement lasts approximately 38 months, with part of that period spent in wooden barrels. The wine is bottled three years after harvest and remains in the cellar for further months before release.
Tasting profile
Garnet red with orange reflections. The intense bouquet combines wood, ripe fruit and spices. The palate is full and persistent, with austere tannins that avoid bitterness or excessive astringency. The wine is characterised as elegant and long-lived.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 18°C with red or roasted meats and savoury cheeses.
