Vineyard and terroir
The grapes ripen in the estate's vineyards at around 60 m above sea level. The Montepeloso vineyards cover just 7 hectares, on hills with clay soils.
Grapes
A blend of five varieties.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand into small crates and fermented at the winery under controlled temperatures. Maceration on the skins lasts 13 to 20 days. Malolactic fermentation follows in French oak barrels.
Ageing
The wine is aged for 15 months in oak barrels, 15% of them new. After bottling it matures a further 9 months in the winery's cellars.
Vintage notes
The 2021 vintage will gradually reveal its full potential through 2030.
Label / history
A Quo first appeared on the market in 2008. Quo means "starting point" in Latin. Robert Parker described it as a superb entry-level wine with expressive flavor and silky refinement. Montepeloso is a small estate owned by Fabio Chiarelotto, a Swiss winemaker with Italian roots. In 1997 he left an academic career at a university in Zurich and bought the wine estate of Willy and Doris Neukom. He does most of the work himself and hires workers mainly for the autumn harvest. Annual production is approximately 45,000 bottles across the estate. The winery has recently been completely rebuilt. Chiarelotto holds that in the region's hot climate a concentrated wine is easy to make, but finesse and elegance together are much harder to achieve.
