Vineyard and terroir
The fruit grows on the hills near the southern end of Lake Garda, in Veneto. The terroir of the Basso Garda area and the Veronese hills is mainly clay soils, which retain moisture and give the vines a steady supply of nutrients even in hot periods, helping the grapes ripen evenly. Lake Garda acts as a climate regulator, easing the heat and keeping nights cool, which helps preserve acidity and aromatic expression.
Grapes
Corvina Veronese brings juicy cherry acidity and lightness. Merlot adds softness and roundness. Cabernet Sauvignon gives depth and backbone. Together they balance open, generous fruit with structure.
Vinification
The grapes are picked by hand in several passes, from September to the end of October, so that the ripeness of each variety can be monitored. This helps the wine retain both freshness and richness. Vinification takes place partly in stainless-steel tanks and partly in large oak vessels. The steel preserves the clean fruit character. The large oak casks add almost no noticeable woody flavour but allow gentle micro-oxygenation, which rounds out the tannins and gives a silky texture. Malolactic fermentation takes place.
Ageing
Around 6 months of ageing, which together with malolactic fermentation softens the acidity and brings the wine together.
Tasting profile
Juicy, velvety and lively, with expressive berry aromas and a soft, enveloping texture. Silky tannins and a balanced, well-composed style.
Serving and pairing
Suited to family dinners and relaxed get-togethers with friends.
Label / history
According to legend, the name Ottella dates back to the XVI century, as shown by a coat of arms that still stands in the estate courtyard. An extract from G. B. Perez's 1900 work "La provincia di Verona ed I suoi vini" states that in the XVI century the winery was known as the only producer from Verona. Ottella is in the Lugano area, in Peschiera del Garda on the southern shore of Lake Garda. It is owned by the brothers Ludovico and Francesco Montresor and their father, Michel. The estate's own vineyards are planted mainly with Trebbiano and grow on clay-limestone soils in a mild climate.
