Questo vino
Vineyard and terroir
The fruit comes from San Benedetto di Lugana, where the soils are rich in white clay. The vines are Guyot-trained.
Vinification
Harvest takes place late, in October. The grapes are picked entirely by hand, transported to the winery in 17 kg crates and sorted by hand before whole-cluster pressing. Alcoholic fermentation is followed by partial malolactic fermentation.
Ageing
The wine remains on its lees for 16 months. Most matures in stainless-steel tanks, with a smaller portion aged in tonneaux and oak barriques.
Vintage notes
In 2019, spring was cool and rainy, particularly in April and May, when temperatures were the lowest recorded for that period in 30 years. An exceptionally hot summer followed, reaching 38 °C in late June and July. Heavy rain and hail occurred in July and August, and temperatures returned to normal only in early August. Harvest ended one week later than in 2018. The grapes retained bright fruit aromas and excellent acidity.
Label / history
According to legend, the Ottella name dates to the sixteenth century, as indicated by the coat of arms preserved in the estate courtyard. G. B. Perez’s 1900 work La provincia di verona ed I suoi vini (The Province of Verona and Its Wines) states that Ottella was known in the sixteenth century as the only producer from Verona.
