Vineyard and terroir
The old vines grow in the Mariondino vineyard in Castiglione Falletto. The site has a west-facing exposure known in the Langhe as Sori d’la Seira and receives the final rays of the setting sun. Mariondino is one of the few vineyards in the area with sandy soil. Its high proportion of sand contributes fruit and finesse; compared with Barolo from the Bussia vineyard, whose soil is rich in sulfide, the wine is less full-bodied.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand into small baskets, gently pressed and subjected to a long maceration. Alcoholic fermentation begins spontaneously with natural yeasts and without added sulfites.
Ageing
The wine ages on its lees in small oak barrels for 24 months at 15 °C, followed by at least six months in bottle.
Tasting profile
Fruit-driven and refined, with less fullness than Barolo from the Bussia vineyard.
Vintage notes
In the commune of Barolo, 2018 was a classic growing season without unusual weather conditions. The grapes ripened evenly at the time typical for the area, attaining excellent quality; the vintage was considered one of rare quality.
Label / history
Barolo Mariondino has been produced from the vineyard’s old Nebbiolo vines since 1986.
