Questo vino
Vineyard and terroir
The current vineyards are in Piani, an area of gently sloping hills at 250–350 m above sea level. The soil contains a small proportion of bentonite-like clay, making it spongy and highly unstable while contributing the tannin structure associated with the wine’s distinctive character. Yields are relatively low.
Before 1990, the fruit came from the Langhe, where it developed ample acidity but relatively little tannin.
Vinification
The must macerates for 15–20 days in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks. The extended maceration contributes to the wine’s complexity and refinement.
Ageing
The wine matures in oak barrels for approximately 8–9 months, followed by several months in bottle before release.
Tasting profile
Rich and silky, with a balanced, harmonious character. Dark fruit and floral notes unfold across the palate, accompanied by unusual intensity and energy. The tannin structure is distinctive, and the wine shows complexity and refinement.
Label / history
The wine was known as Ronchi until 1990, when it was renamed Piani after the area containing the estate’s current vineyards. “Piani” means “flat” in Italian, referring to the hill’s gentle slopes.
