Label / history
Chianti's wine traditions extend back to Etruscan and Roman times. The first documents using Chianti as the name of both a wine-producing area and its wine date to the 13th century and refer to the Lega del Chianti, established in Florence to regulate relations with the districts of Radda, Gaiole and Castellina. The league's emblem was a black rooster on a gold field; the Gallo Nero later became the symbol of the Chianti Classico consortium.
