Vineyard and terroir
The wine comes from old vines in the central part of Asili, one of Barbaresco’s historic geographical mentions. Roagna’s 0.22-hectare parcel lies in the historic heart of the hill, halfway up the slope at 250 metres, with south-westerly exposure. Two roads divide this section into the upper bricco, the heart and the lower part.
The soil originated through marine sedimentation during the Tertiary period, around 70 million years ago. It is calcareous clay crossed by layered veins of sand. The site adjoins the rocche area and follows the Pajé hill.
Grapes
Nebbiolo from old vines. The Vecchie Viti selection is drawn from vines of massal origin over 50–60 years old, propagated with material taken during pruning in the same vineyard.
Ageing
Wines in the Vecchie Viti category mature for an average of five years in wood and concrete.
Vintage notes
The wine was released as Barbaresco Asili from 2004 through 2006. Beginning with the 2007 vintage, it has carried the Vecchie Viti designation. The vintages represented are 2004–2019.
