Vinification
Long-aged Barolo Pira provides the base. Separate infusions of herbs, bark and flowers prepared in Grappa di Barolo are added to the wine according to an old family recipe.
Ageing
The Barolo Pira is aged long enough to develop secondary aromas fully. After the botanical infusions are incorporated, the elixir rests for several more months before bottling.
Technical data
Production is approximately 300 bottles per edition.
Label / history
The tradition of wines enriched with herbs and spices has ancient roots. In the Langhe, Barolo Chinato is associated with Dr Cappellano, a pharmacist from Serralunga d’Alba who devised an elixir for curative purposes at the end of the nineteenth century. Families across the Langa subsequently developed individual recipes shaped by their tastes and by herbs found in their vineyards. Roagna’s version follows an old family recipe.
