Vineyard and terroir
The fruit comes from an approximately one-hectare parcel in the municipality of Montemarzino in the Colli Tortonesi. Acquired for the project in 2014, the site lies at 450 m, faces east and has soils of Tortonian origin. Historical genetic material has been propagated through massal selection to preserve biodiversity and the vineyard's expression. Production amounts to a few thousand bottles.
Grapes
Timorasso, a historical variety of the Colli Tortonesi.
Vinification
The grapes travel to the winery in small crates. Whole berries macerate for a few hours inside the press. After pressing, the must is deliberately allowed to brown without added sulphites. The cloudy must then ferments in wooden vats with a pied de cuve prepared from indigenous yeasts.
Ageing
The wine remains in the wooden vats without racking, maturing on its lees at the bottom of the vessels for two years before bottling.
Vintage notes
Vintages from 2014 through 2022 are represented.
Label / history
Montemarzino is Roagna's most recently created white wine. The project was conceived to produce an indigenous white capable of very long ageing.
