Vineyard and terroir
The fruit for the 2003 vintage came from a 1.6 ha vineyard with southern and south-western exposure. The vines averaged between 20 and 35 years of age and grew in marl with layers of clay. The grapes were picked by hand in the second half of August, once fully ripe. The estate used organic methods in the vineyard.
The estate is in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, whose mild, humid climate and proximity to both the mountains and the sea provide favourable growing conditions.
Vinification
After gentle pressing in a pneumatic press, the juice was cold-settled to separate it from the sediment. Fermentation took place on the grape skins. The wine did not undergo malolactic fermentation.
Ageing
The wine matured for 11 months in barrels, 25% of them new, followed by one year in bottle before release.
Label / history
Production was limited to approximately 3,000 bottles. The label has a festive design.
In the local dialect, “Ronco” means “vineyard on a hill”, while “Gnemiz” is the name of the family that lived and made wine on the property for centuries. The Palazzolo family bought the land in the early 1960s and retained its historic name. Enzo Palazzolo built a new winery in 1964; management passed to his daughter Serena in 1981. She oversaw production from the vineyard through bottling with oenologists Roberto Cipresso and Andrea Pittana.
