Vineyard and terroir
The Chardonnay comes from a single 6.7 ha cru with deep, moderately gravelly soils. Reddish in colour from iron and aluminium oxides, the soils also contain sand and silt. The site has slightly higher average temperatures and a narrower difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures. Winds from both the continent and the Adriatic bring constantly changing weather, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly. The estate uses organic farming methods, without pesticides or chemical fertilisers.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested in September and gently pressed. Before fermentation, they undergo six hours of maceration at 8 °C. Fermentation takes place in stainless-steel tanks for 18–24 days at 16–19 °C, followed by malolactic fermentation.
Ageing
The wine matures on its lees for eight months in French barriques: 40% new, 35% one year old and 25% two years old. It then rests in bottle for ten months. The estate releases its white wines no earlier than two years after the harvest.
Serving and pairing
Decanting before serving is not recommended.
Label / history
Vie di Romans means “Roads of the Romans”, referring to a road that once connected Rome with the port city of Aquileia and passed through the present site of the Gallo family’s cellars. The family has run the estate for more than a century. Gianfranco Gallo inherited it from his father in the 1970s while still a teenager.
