Vineyard and terroir

Sorgente is a 1.5 ha cru at 450 m, divided into old and new vineyard sections. Its Sangiovese is grafted onto 420A and SO4 rootstocks. Heavy clayey sand and stony galestro delay ripening relative to Piaggione and Teatro and tend to produce slightly lower alcohol. The site’s character is expressed through freshness, layered red fruit and fine tannins.

Grapes

100% Sangiovese from Sorgente.

Vinification

The 2019 fermented in cement at 30 °C without selected yeasts. Maceration lasted 40 days; the marc was hydraulically pressed, and malolactic fermentation was completed.

Ageing

The 2019 matured for 40 months in a 30 hl Mittelberger wooden cask and for 12 months in bottle. No fining or filtration was used.

Technical data

The 2019 yield was 19 hl/ha. Production comprised 3,748 bottles of 750 ml, 120 magnums and three 3 L bottles. Alcohol was 14%, total acidity 5.4 g/L, net volatile acidity 0.67 g/L and net dry extract 25.2 g/L. Total sulphur dioxide was 22 mg/L and free sulphur dioxide 11 mg/L.

Tasting profile

Fresh and seductive, with layered red fruit, lively acidity and fine tannins reflecting the vineyard’s heavy soils.
