Vineyard and terroir

The wine comes from very old vineyards in the Valle del Sessantanni, an area of approximately 40 ha between San Marzano and Sava in the heart of the Primitivo di Manduria zone. The hot, dry climate has pronounced day-to-night temperature differences. The fine-textured red loam is rich in iron oxides and lies over calcareous subsoil with occasional rocks at the surface. The vines are bush-trained alberelli, at least 60 years old, planted at 5,000 vines per hectare.

Grapes

100% Primitivo. Only a small number of bunches are retained and allowed to wither naturally on the vine on the short shoots of the old bush vines.

Vinification

The withered grapes are picked by hand in the first days of October. A cold soak at 8°C lasts approximately 24–48 hours, followed by ten days of maceration and temperature-controlled alcoholic fermentation at 24–26°C with selected indigenous yeasts.

Ageing

The wine matures for 12 months in French- and American-oak barriques.

Technical data

The 2022 vintage offered by the winery shop has 13.5% alcohol by volume.

Tasting profile

Intense ruby red with garnet reflections. The persistent, complex bouquet evokes overripe fruit, cherry jam and dried figs, accompanied by light spice. Full-bodied and enveloping on the palate, it combines honeyed sweetness with a supporting line of acidity.

Serving and pairing

Serve at 16°C with dry almond pastries, fruit tarts or strongly flavoured aged cheeses. Recommended drinking window: within ten years of the harvest.

Label / history

The name refers to the eleven rows originally selected to produce this naturally sweet wine, an expression of naturally withered Primitivo from old bush vines.
