Vineyard and terroir
Primitivo comes from very old vineyards selected around San Marzano and Sava in the province of Taranto, at the centre of the Primitivo di Manduria DOP production zone. The climate is hot, with very little rainfall and a broad day–night temperature range. The vines are at least sixty years old, trained as traditional Puglian alberelli and planted at 5,000 vines per hectare. Fine-textured loam rich in iron oxides gives the surface soil its characteristic red colour; beneath it lies limestone with occasional rocky outcrops.
Grapes
100% Primitivo.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand in mid-September at advanced ripeness. Destemming and crushing are followed by 24–48 hours of cold pre-fermentation maceration at 8°C. Temperature-controlled maceration and alcoholic fermentation with indigenous yeasts then continue for about ten days at 24–26°C.
Ageing
Malolactic fermentation takes place in stainless steel, followed by 12 months in French and American oak barrels.
Tasting profile
Deep, elegant ruby red. The broad and complex bouquet offers prunes, cherry jam, light spice and tobacco. The palate is full-bodied, balanced and soft, with fine tannins and a long finish marked by cocoa, coffee and vanilla.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 18°C with savoury first courses, red meats or game.
Label / history
Sessantanni is the estate’s icon wine and takes its name from the minimum age of its traditionally trained bush vines. It is presented as an expression of the winery’s history and as the label that changed international perceptions of Puglian wine.
