Vineyard and terroir
The 2017 Limited Edition comes from a selection of the estate’s finest Merlot grapes. The linked technical sheet places the vineyards at Peschiera del Garda on clay soils, with an average vine age of 25 years and a high planting density of 8,500 vines per hectare. The vines are spur-cordon trained, carry six to eight buds per plant and yield 65 quintals per hectare.
The 2017 growing season began with unusual spring frosts. Temperatures subsequently rose, while timely rainfall supported the growth and enrichment of the grapes. Dry, mild conditions during harvest resulted in a smaller crop of notably high quality.
Grapes
100% Merlot.
Vinification
Harvest takes place by hand into crates during the first ten days of September. The grapes are cooled briefly to preserve their aromas. Fermentation proceeds in stainless steel with pump-overs and punch-downs to extract colour and tannins.
Ageing
The Limited Edition is described as having been aged for six years. The technical sheet linked from its page instead gives 18 months in French-oak barriques followed by at least six months in bottle.
Technical data
The 2017 Limited Edition is presented in a 750 ml bottle at 14% alcohol. The linked technical sheet gives a serving temperature of 18°C.
Tasting profile
An intense, dense ruby red with garnet reflections. The nose is broad and complex, combining ripe red fruit and preserves—plum, cherry and blueberry—with cocoa, sweet spices and a light herbal accent. The 2017 release also shows a ripe expression of blackcurrant and spirit-soaked plum, together with spice and liquorice.
The palate is full, warm and substantial yet elegant, round and soft, with velvety tannins. Ripe-fruit intensity is balanced by vibrant acidity, while the finish is persistent, aromatic and fruit-driven.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 18°C. Pair with substantial red meats such as beef ribs and braised dishes, game including wild boar, venison or duck, and strongly flavoured mature hard cheeses.
Vintage notes
The 2017 vintage followed a frost-affected spring, warmer subsequent conditions and beneficial rainfall. A dry, mild harvest produced reduced quantities of concentrated fruit.
Label / history
Produced only in the finest harvests, the Limited Edition is conceived as a tribute to Sansonina’s long-term vision and as a Merlot intended for extended evolution.
