Vineyard and terroir
Omaggio combines Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese from Sonoma County. For the 2021 vintage, the linked technical sheet identifies both components as originating in Alexander Valley.
Grapes
The 2022 release blends Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese; exact proportions are not stated. The blend is Cabernet-led aromatically, while Sangiovese shapes the palate and acidity.
Vinification
The grapes were sorted and destemmed into small open-top fermentors, retaining roughly 70% whole berries. Sangiovese was fermented with native yeast to slow fermentation and preserve floral character. Cabernet underwent a three-day cold soak with pump-overs through a screen to increase color extraction. Once fermentation commenced, punch-downs encouraged early extraction; the wine was drained to barrel as fermentation slowed or after 9–12 days on skins. Cabernet and Sangiovese were first blended after fermentation, with further blending adjustments during élevage.
Ageing
After settling, the wine was transferred to puncheons to complete malolactic fermentation. The 2022 wine matured for 16 months in French oak, 33% new, with 500 L puncheons representing half of the vessels. It was bottled unfined with minimal filtration.
Technical data
The 2022 release contains 15.5% alcohol. The linked 2021 technical sheet records pH 3.74 and total acidity of 6.0 g/L.
Tasting profile
Cabernet contributes dense aromas of black plum, mocha and cassis, lifted by red cherry and floral stone-fruit notes. Integrated tannins and luscious dark fruit shape the full-bodied mid-palate. Bright acidity and fine tannins carry the finish and provide the structure for further ageing.
Serving and pairing
Pair with grilled beef and a slightly piquant chimichurri sauce.
Vintage notes
For 2021, limited water supplies and irrigation restrictions coincided with relatively few episodes of extreme heat. Moderate ripening helped retain acidity, while low moisture during budbreak and bloom reduced some yields and concentrated flavor. The fruit was hand-harvested from September 7 through October 6.
Label / history
“Omaggio” means “homage” in Italian. Created for the estate's centennial in 1995, the wine honors founders Edoardo and Angela Seghesio, who planted the family's first American vineyard in 1895. Its two varieties connect the first and second generations of Seghesio plantings.
