Questo vino
Vineyard and terroir
The grapes grow on stony soils.
Vinification
For the 2014 vintage, Merlot was harvested in late September, followed by Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc in late October. The grapes were picked by hand and carefully sorted. Fermentation took place in stainless-steel tanks, using organic winemaking methods.
Ageing
Each grape variety spent between 15 and 24 months in oak barrels. After bottling, the wine matured for approximately two further years in the winery’s cellars.
Label / history
Phi 20 Anni was created to mark the twentieth anniversary of the first vintage of Phigaia.
The winery’s history is associated with Abazia di Nervesa, a Benedictine monastery founded near Nervesa della Battaglia in the eleventh century. Its monks cultivated grapes and made wine, developing a large estate that survived until it was destroyed in 1918 during the First World War. In 1986, Francesco Serafini and Antonello Vidotto set out to revive the former monastery winery. Using old documents and maps, they began reconstructing its historic architecture, vineyards and wider landscape. The winery is also developing and selecting local vines in an ongoing effort to restore the area’s genetic heritage.
