Storia
The beginnings
The estate originated in the early 20th century through Giuseppe Sordo, establishing the foundation of a family winegrowing enterprise in the Barolo area.
Giovanni Sordo and the vineyard acquisitions
A decisive phase began with Giuseppe's son, Giovanni Sordo. From the middle of the 20th century onward, Giovanni identified and acquired highly regarded vineyard sites known locally as surì. These parcels were selected for their suitability for producing wines of quality and prestige and became central to the estate's development.
Four generations in Barolo
The family enterprise has continued through four generations. Operating from Borgata Garbelletto in Castiglione Falletto, it now cultivates 53 hectares of vineyards across ten communes and produces eight Barolo crus.
Terroir
The estate is based at Borgata Garbelletto in Castiglione Falletto, in the heart of the Barolo area. Its 53 hectares of vineyards extend across Castiglione Falletto, Serralunga d'Alba, Monforte d'Alba, Barolo, Novello, La Morra, Verduno, Grinzane Cavour, Vezza d'Alba and Volpeglino, encompassing territory in the Langhe and Roero.
The estate's historical vineyard development centred on surì: sites selected for their strong winegrowing potential. Eight individual crus contribute to its Barolo production.
Vinificazione
The cellar complex combines a historic section with a modern winery. A dedicated “Barolo tunnel” houses the estate's large-format bottles and connects the older cellar spaces to the contemporary facility. The modern section contains the production line used for bottling and packaging.
Filosofia
The family's approach centres on expressing the value of its winegrowing territory. The development of the vineyard holdings reflects Giovanni Sordo's emphasis on selecting sites for their capacity to produce wines of quality and prestige, while the continuity of four generations anchors the estate in Barolo's winegrowing landscape.
