Vineyard and terroir
The fruit comes from the Costalunga vineyard, set in a natural amphitheatre between Verona, Lake Garda, Monte Baldo and the Lessinia mountains. The hillside vineyards lie at an average altitude of 300–350 metres and face south-east and south-west. Their predominantly calcareous moraine soils are stony and contain clay. Guyot-trained vines average 20–30 years of age, carry six to eight buds per plant and yield 80 quintals per hectare.
Grapes
55% Corvina, 25% Rondinella, 10% Corvinone and a combined 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
Vinification
The grapes are picked strictly by hand from the second half of September through the first half of October and carefully selected. All varieties undergo a light drying period in the fruttaio lasting less than one month. The bunches are spaced to promote even, natural dehydration while retaining freshness. They are then crushed and macerated on the skins for 10–12 days.
Ageing
At least 12 months in oak casks.
Technical data
The 2021 Wine Club release is labelled at 13.5% alcohol. Serving temperature: 18°C.
Tasting profile
Ruby red. The aromatic profile combines dried fruit, cherry, coffee and tobacco. Good acidity preserves freshness, while the tannins are delicate. The palate is intense, balanced and harmonious, with the light appassimento contributing additional structure and aromatic complexity.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 18°C. Pair with braised or roast meats, game, meat ragù sauces and mature cheeses.
Label / history
Alanera was conceived as a contemporary interpretation of Valpolicella, bringing the native Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella together with smaller proportions of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. It also pays tribute to Sergio Zenato’s work in Valpolicella. The three swallows on the label symbolize Verona, Lake Garda and the surrounding Monte Baldo and Lessinia ranges, as well as the trio of native grape varieties.
