Vineyard and terroir

Archivio Storico comes from the oldest vines in the highest and best-exposed part of Tenuta Costalunga at Sant’Ambrogio di Valpolicella. The south-east-facing hillside site lies at 300–350 m. Its predominantly chalky, calcareous soils include marl-rich sections where the roots descend deeply in search of mineral salts. The Guyot-trained vines average 30 years of age and carry 6–7 buds per plant. Yield is 80 quintals per hectare.

Grapes

80% Corvina, 10% Rondinella, 10% Oseleta and Croatina.

Vinification

Fruit is harvested in the first week of October and manually selected into small 5 kg crates. It dries naturally for approximately four months in dry, well-ventilated fruttai. Crushing takes place in January, followed by a slow 15–20-day fermentation on the skins.

Ageing

A single special 30 hl Slavonian oak cask is selected for ten years of maturation. The limited release comprises 2,500 numbered bottles and 200 numbered Magnums, presented in Slavonian oak cases.

Technical data

Alcohol is 16%. Formats comprise 750 ml and Magnum.

Tasting profile

The colour is deep ruby, gradually developing garnet tones. The bouquet is intense and fruity, with cherry, Marasca cherry and small berries complemented by spice. The palate is warm, full and firmly structured.

The 2013 is precise and elegant, with ripe Marasca cherry, blackberry and fruit in spirit joined by balsamic and spicy nuances. It is structured yet dynamic, with silky tannins, freshness and strong ageing potential.

Serving and pairing

Serve at 18°C and open at least one hour in advance. Pair with roast game, grilled red meat and mature cheeses, or enjoy without food.

Vintage notes

The label returns at approximately ten-year intervals to honour an exceptional vintage. The balanced 2013 growing season encouraged slow, complete ripening; appassimento produced harmonious concentration supported by good acidity. The site presents the released vintages 2013 and 2008.

Label / history

Archivio Storico celebrates the estate’s heritage, patience and connection to Valpolicella Classica through the long evolution of one specially chosen cask.
