Vineyard and terroir

Costa di Monte is Tenuta di Sesta’s highest vineyard, situated close to the winery at 350 metres above sea level. This south-facing, later-ripening site was given a separate Brunello bottling to express its distinctive aromatic character and freshness. Planting density is 5,000 vines per hectare, and the vines are trained to a spur-pruned cordon.

Vineyard work comprises manual winter pruning, shoot thinning, desuckering and control of bunch numbers. Harvest selection concentrates on the smallest and finest bunches.

Grapes

100% Sangiovese grosso. The 2021 grapes were harvested manually from 6 to 15 October.

Vinification

Maceration lasts approximately 25 days. Alcoholic and malolactic fermentations take place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks.

Ageing

Maturation lasts 2.5–3 years in French oak casks of 15–20 hl, followed by approximately 15 months in bottle.

Technical data

Vintage: 2021. Alcohol: 14% vol. Total acidity: 5.20 g/L. Total dry extract: 32.0 g/L. Average annual production: 3,500 bottles. Packaging is a 600 g Bordeaux bottle.

Tasting profile

Ruby red tends toward garnet with age. The bouquet is very intense, broad and refined, with rose and violet floral tones and red-fruit notes of cherry and blackberry. The palate is full-bodied and complex, dry yet soft, with outstanding freshness, velvety tannins, balance, intensity, elegance and considerable length.

Serving and pairing

Pair with red meats, game, structured first courses and mature cheeses.

Label / history

Costa di Monte debuted as a separate limited-production Brunello with the 2019 vintage. Its identity rests on the selection of the best late-ripening fruit from the estate’s highest vineyard.
