Vineyard and terroir
The Sangiovese Grosso comes from south-facing estate vineyards at 280–350 m above sea level, planted at 5,000 vines per hectare and trained to the spurred-cordon system. Vineyard work includes manual dry pruning, shoot thinning, crown desuckering and bunch thinning, followed by a manual harvest.
Grapes
100% Sangiovese Grosso. Conceived as the younger sibling of Brunello, the wine combines Sangiovese structure with the freshness and liveliness of an earlier-drinking red.
Vinification
The 2023 wine underwent 15–18 days of skin maceration. Alcoholic and malolactic fermentations took place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks.
Ageing
Matured for 10 months in 30–35 hL Slavonian oak barrels, followed by at least two months in bottle.
Technical data
Vintage 2023. Alcohol: 14.5% vol. Total acidity: 5.4 g/L. Total dry extract: 34 g/L. Average annual production is approximately 30,000 bottles, filled in 550 g Bordeaux bottles.
Tasting profile
Ruby red. The broad, intense bouquet combines red fruit with spicy nuances. The palate is dry and soft, with agreeable tannins, balance, intensity and aromatic persistence, finishing with an elegant character.
Serving and pairing
A versatile table wine suited to rich first courses, pasta with tomato sauce, traditional Tuscan dishes such as ribollita, roasts, red meat, rabbit and medium-aged cheeses. It is intended to be enjoyed relatively young but can also develop well with bottle age.
Label / history
The label depicts the estate manor house, as do those of Brunello and Brunello Riserva.
