Label / history
Chianti was once easily recognised by its straw-covered bottle, the "fiasco" (plural "fiaschi"): a short, round-bellied bottle wrapped in straw. Fiaschi came into use in the Middle Ages, when glassmaking was still imperfect and expensive and bottles were very fragile. Today this style of bottle is generally reserved for top and gift editions, and Chianti is also sold in standard bottles.
