Vineyard and terroir
Picconero is made from estate fruit grown in Chianti Classico, Tuscany, on lime-and-clay soils containing a substantial proportion of gravel-sized stones. The vineyards were planted by spring 2000 at densities of 6,900–11,000 vines per hectare. Yield is 50 q/ha. The vineyards are certified organic, and the estate identifies its activity as carbon neutral. Production is restricted to selected top vintages.
Grapes
100% Merlot.
Vinification
Selection takes place first in the vineyard and then on an optical sorter at the winery. The fruit is destemmed, and intact berries are transferred immediately to French-oak fermenters. Temperature-controlled fermentation includes 30 days of skin contact. The wine then enters 100% new, open-top French barriques, where gentle manual punch-downs are performed.
Ageing
The wine matures for 18 months in 100% new French-oak barriques, including 6 months on the fine lees, followed by 12 months in bottle before release.
Technical data
Production varies sharply by vintage: 6,200 bottles in 2022, 5,700 in 2021, 6,900 in 2020, 4,200 in 2019, 5,700 in 2018, 2,500 in 2016, 9,000 in 2015, 4,200 in 2014, 15,500 in 2011, 16,500 in 2010 and 7,900 in 2009.
Tasting profile
Rich, concentrated and muscular, yet balanced, with substantial tannins and layered cherry, plum and wild-berry fruit. Spice, vanilla and licorice add complexity. The long finish carries juicy fruit and mouthwatering tannins for several minutes. Though youthful and sensual, it is intended for extended bottle development.
Label / history
Pier Luigi Tolaini’s objective was an uncompromising wine inspired by distinguished Bordeaux châteaux. The name combines picco, Italian for “peak,” and nero, “black,” a word historically used in Italy in reference to red wine.
