Vineyard and terroir
Vallenuova is both the estate name and the winery's formal address. Its vineyard surrounds the winery in Chianti Classico, Tuscany. The silty clay soil is limestone-rich and notably stony. Planting was completed in spring 2000 at a density of 7,350 vines per hectare; yield is 60 quintals per hectare. The estate is certified organic and carbon neutral.
Grapes
95% Sangiovese and 5% Canaiolo.
Vinification
Selection begins in the vineyard during harvest and continues at the winery with an optical sorter. The grapes are destemmed, after which the intact berries go directly into stainless-steel tanks. Alcoholic fermentation is temperature-controlled, with 20 days of skin contact.
Ageing
The wine matures for 10 months in a combination of Tuscan, Slavonian and Austrian oak casks.
Tasting profile
Black cherry is joined by tobacco, licorice and spice. Elegant tannins are balanced by the fruit, while the finish is long, juicy and fresh, combining crispness with texture and expressing the character of Sangiovese from Castelnuovo Berardenga.
