Vineyard and terroir
The 47 Anno Domini company farms 25 hectares of vineyards on both sides of the historic Claudia Augusta road, which runs through the winery. The vineyard soils are fertile, mainly clay and rich in mineral salts. The nearby Piave River gives a distinctive character to wines from grapes grown along its banks. The winery lies a few kilometres from the Adriatic coast and very close to the historic centre of Treviso, in an area designated for Piave wines.
Grapes
Made with at least 85% Sangiovese. Up to 15% other local varieties may be added, depending on the vintage.
Vinification
Made by a traditional method. The grapes macerate on their skins for around 10 days, then ferment at a controlled temperature of 30 °C.
Ageing
Aged in cement vats, to preserve freshness and the varietal character of the grapes. The wine can age well for up to 5 years, developing further over time.
Tasting profile
A classic dry red with a good tannic structure, fresh acidity and bright fruit notes on both nose and palate.
Label / history
The Piantaferro range is made at the 47 Anno Domini winery, part of the Tombacco group. The name joins pianta ("plant" or "crop") and ferro ("iron" or "rod"). It comes from a local farming tradition in which farmers marked newly found fertile land by driving a stake into the ground. The trademark shows three stylised rows of vines, representing the high fertility of the Piave area.
The winery's name refers to the year 47 AD, when Emperor Claudius completed one of ancient Rome's most important roads, later named Claudia Augusta.
