Vineyard and terroir
A.D. 1441 is made from a hand selection of the best grapes from Vigna del Castello and Vigna del Velo. The vineyards stand at 290 m with west–northwest exposure and medium-textured soils containing limestone clay and sand. Training combines spurred cordon and Guyot at approximately 4,000 vines per hectare. The general profile records 25-year-old vines; the 2017 sheet gives 26 years. Yields are 60 quintals per hectare and 1.5 kg per plant.
Grapes
100% Sangiovese.
Vinification
Harvesting and pre-vinification selection are performed by hand. Indigenous yeasts carry out fermentation, followed by 30 days of submerged-cap maceration at a controlled 23°C. The general harvest window is late September to early October; the 2017 vintage was harvested in early October.
Ageing
The wine matures for 36 months in 15 and 20 hl Slavonian durmast casks, then spends at least eight months in bottle.
Technical data
Alcohol: 14%. The general profile gives a production of 2,000 bottles, while 2,500 bottles were made in 2017. Production is extremely limited and reserved for great vintages.
Tasting profile
The general profile presents a clear, intense ruby colour with garnet glints. Red fruit, chocolate and leather shape a complex, elegant and intense aroma. The palate is structured, refined and youthful, with silky tannins, pronounced acidity and persistent flavour. It is harmonious and balanced, with substantial evolutionary potential.
For 2017, the aromatic profile centres on ripe cherry, citrus and sweet spices over dark earthy notes. The palate combines superior structure with present but fully integrated tannins and an exceptionally long finish.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 18°C after allowing the wine to breathe. Pair with red meats, mature cheeses, game and refined cuisine.
Vintage notes
The 2017 release was conceived for very long ageing and was limited to 2,500 bottles.
Label / history
