Vineyard and terroir
The general profile associates Rosso di Montalcino with Vigna del Piano and Vigna dei Cipressi, while the 2021 bottling expresses Vigna del Lago and Vigna del Piano. The vineyards are at 250 m with west–southwest exposure. Their medium-textured soil contains limestone clay and sand. Planting density is approximately 4,000–4,500 vines per hectare. The general training systems are spurred cordon and Guyot, with vines aged 17–20 years; the 2021 sheet specifies Guyot-trained vines aged 28 years. Yields are 65 quintals per hectare and 1.4 kg per plant.
Grapes
100% Sangiovese.
Vinification
Harvesting is manual. Fermentation is spontaneous, followed by maceration in stainless-steel tanks at a controlled 23°C. The general profile gives a harvest from late September to early October and 25 days of maceration. For 2021, harvest took place in mid-September and maceration lasted 20 days.
Ageing
The general profile specifies at least nine months in 20 hl Slavonian durmast casks and at least four months in bottle. The 2021 sheet instead records six months in Slavonian oak casks, followed by the same minimum four-month bottle maturation.
Technical data
Alcohol: 14%. General production: 22,000 bottles; 2021 production: 26,600 bottles. Formats comprise 750 ml European Bordeaux bottles in horizontal cases of six or twelve and 1.5 L bottles in individual wooden cases.
Tasting profile
Clear, intense ruby in colour. The complex aroma combines strawberry and cherry jam with light spice, floral tones and mineral notes. The palate is balanced and intense, with dense, elegant tannins and a long, savoury, mineral finish. The overall impression is harmonious, with considerable potential for development.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 18–20°C. Pair with white meats, semi-mature cheeses and pasta.
Vintage notes
The 2021 release came from Vigna del Lago and Vigna del Piano. Its 20-day maceration and six-month cask maturation were shorter than the 25 days and minimum nine months given in the general profile. Production reached 26,600 bottles.
