Storia
The nineteenth-century place-name
Pian delle Vigne takes its name from the locality in which the estate stands. Its defining landmark is a characteristic nineteenth-century railway station located on the property.
Acquisition and first harvest — 1995
The Antinori family acquired Pian delle Vigne in 1995. The same year brought the first harvest of Pian delle Vigne Brunello di Montalcino, establishing the estate as the family's personal interpretation of this historic Montalcino wine.
Vignaferrovia — 2004
The first vintage of Pian delle Vigne Vignaferrovia was produced in 2004. The Riserva comes from a small vineyard beside the old railway station and is made only in selected vintages. It was not produced in 2005, 2008, 2011, 2014 or 2017.
Terroir
Pian delle Vigne lies 6 km southwest of Montalcino. The 184 ha estate includes 83 ha of vineyards at approximately 130 m above sea level, predominantly oriented southwest.
The soils are principally clay and limestone with abundant fine stones. The Vignaferrovia sector has a particularly strong presence of rocks, gravel and stones. This rocky profile naturally restrains vine vigour and supports grape quality.
Vignaferrovia's southwest exposure opens the vineyard to maritime winds. These breezes moderate summer temperatures and limit heat peaks.
Vinificazione
Sangiovese is cultivated across the estate's 83 ha of vineyards. In the rocky Vignaferrovia parcel, the abundance of stones naturally limits vine vigour.
Fruit selection is an identified part of the estate's work: the Vignaferrovia protocol includes meticulous selection of whole, healthy and ripe bunches before vinification. For the 2021 Brunello season, pruning was deliberately carried out later than usual to delay budbreak and reduce damage from the temperature drop recorded on 7 April. Harvest fruit was healthy and aromatic, with picking taking place during the second half of September. Vignaferrovia was harvested on 27 September in 2019, while the 2024 Rosso di Montalcino harvest began on 18 September.
Brunello di Montalcino
For Pian delle Vigne Brunello di Montalcino, harvested grapes are brought to the cellar, destemmed and gently crushed, then transferred to stainless-steel vats for alcoholic fermentation. Maceration on the skins lasts approximately 12 days at a controlled temperature of 28 °C. After malolactic fermentation, the wine enters oak casks ranging from 30 to 80 hl. It matures in wood for two years before bottling and an additional lengthy period of bottle aging.
Vignaferrovia
Meticulously selected, intact, healthy and ripe bunches are destemmed and gently crushed. The fruit is transferred to truncated-cone stainless-steel vats for alcoholic fermentation and remains in contact with the skins for approximately two weeks. Maturation then proceeds for more than two years through oak vessels of 5, 15 and ultimately 30 hl, followed by extended bottle aging. The 2019 vintage was bottled on 25 May 2022.
Rosso di Montalcino
For the 2024 Rosso di Montalcino, freshly harvested grapes were destemmed and gently crushed before transfer to stainless-steel vats. Alcoholic fermentation took place at 28 °C over approximately 8–10 days. After malolactic fermentation, the wine aged for approximately ten months and was bottled on 14 July 2025.
Maturation philosophy
Large casks are central to Pian delle Vigne's approach to Brunello. Their purpose is to preserve the integrity of Sangiovese fruit while developing the vibrant elegance sought in the finished wine.
Filosofia
Pian delle Vigne is conceived as the Antinori family's personal and profound interpretation of historic Brunello di Montalcino. Its maturation philosophy is centred on large casks, with the stated aim of safeguarding the integrity of Sangiovese fruit and giving Brunello a vibrant, elegant profile.
The estate presents its identity through the relationship between its vineyards, cellar and the Montalcino landscape. Vignaferrovia narrows that interpretation to a particular rocky, railway-side parcel, while Rosso di Montalcino is intended to emphasize the fragrance and freshness of pure Sangiovese.
