About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The vineyards lie on south- and southwest-facing hillsides at elevations of 300–400 m a.s.l. They are trained to spurred cordon and Guyot and have a mean vine age exceeding 15 years. Sangiovese is selected from the oldest vines.
Grapes
Blend proportions vary by vintage. Latest published vintage (2020): 80% Sangiovese and 20% typical red grape from Montefalco.
Vinification
The Riserva is made only in the best Sangiovese vintages. Harvest starts with Sangiovese toward the end of September and finishes with the typical red grape from Montefalco in October; all grapes are picked by hand. The maceration vessels are filled by gravity. Fermentation takes place on the skins, with maceration lasting approximately three to four weeks.
Ageing
After blending, the component varieties mature in large oak barrels for at least 18 months. Clarification takes place in cement vats, followed by at least six months of bottle ageing.
Technical data
The 2020 vintage has 14.5% alcohol and is available in a 750 mL bottle. Contains sulfites.
Tasting profile
The wine is an intense ruby red. Its bouquet is powerful and complex, combining fruit, flowers and spices. The palate is structured yet elegant, with notable aromatic and flavour persistence.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 18°C. Pair with flavoursome first courses, grilled meat, roasts or mature hard cheeses.
Vintage notes
The 2020 season featured a broad day-to-night temperature range and limited rain during spring and early summer, resulting in slow, uneven ripening. From late August through September, conditions became dry and warm while retaining marked diurnal temperature variation.
Label / history
The first vintage was 1998. The wine is the Riserva expression of Montefalco Rosso and is released only from selected vintages.
