About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The vines are trained to a double spurred cordon at a density of 4,500 plants per hectare. Yield is 9,000 kg/ha. The deep, medium-textured soil is rich in limestone and clay.
Grapes
Sangiovese, Merlot and Sagrantino. The exact proportions are not specified. The predominant Sangiovese component gives freshness and approachability, while Sagrantino provides the blend’s distinctively local character. Harvest runs from September to mid-October.
Vinification
Fermentation takes place in stainless steel, with 28 days of maceration on the skins.
Ageing
The wine matures for 12 months in barriques and 3,000-litre oak casks, followed by 10 months in bottle before release.
Technical data
Latest published vintage: 2023. Alcohol: 14.00% vol. Bottle size: 750 ml. The wine is conceived as a terroir-driven red with medium ageing potential.
Tasting profile
Ruby red with violet highlights. The complex, intense bouquet combines cinchona bark, sweet spices and cinnamon with persistent, fresh red-fruit aromas. The palate is well structured and vibrantly fresh, with pleasant tannins and a long finish. Its balance, depth and ease of drinking reflect the complementary roles of the three varieties.
The broader profile also encompasses cocoa, green spices, cloves, wild berries and plum jam, with dense, soft, mature tannins, balanced acidity and a lingering, moderately austere finish.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 16–18°C. Traditional pairing: Umbrian porchetta with grilled porcini mushrooms. Vegetarian pairing: spelt and legume soup. Fusion pairing: Peking duck with hoisin sauce. Other suitable dishes include stewed freshwater fish, lamb liver, Chianina beef meatballs scented with thyme, and grilled or sautéed porcini mushrooms.
Label / history
Montefalco Rosso combines the freshness of a Sangiovese-led regional blend with the character of Sagrantino. The current label features a wolf, representing the nobility, strength, balance and territorial identity of Tenuta Brancalupo.
