About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The vineyards lie across the hills of the province of Agrigento, mainly on limestone soils, at elevations starting from 250 metres above sea level. Planting density is 4,000 vines per hectare.
The estate, Baglio del Cristo di Campobello, owns 30 hectares south of the town of Campobello di Licata, in the southwestern part of Sicily. Its vineyards stretch in a band 8 km from the coast. Daytime temperatures in the area reach 35–40 °C, and nighttime temperatures are 20–22 °C. Nero d'Avola makes up 60% of the vineyard area and Grillo 25%. The remaining 15% is planted with small amounts of Catarratto, Syrah, Inzolia, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay.
Grapes
The blend is equal parts Grillo, Chardonnay, Inzolia and Catarratto.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand from late August to early September. After thorough selection they are gently pressed, and the juice undergoes cold settling, followed by fermentation.
Ageing
After fermentation the wine matures on its lees in stainless-steel tanks for 3 months, then spends a further 2 months in bottle in the winery's cellars.
Tasting profile
Refined and well balanced, with an appealing mix of aromas. Fresh and summery in character.
Label / history
The labels of the C'D'C' wines show a section of veil fabric. Veils were so widely worn by Sicilian women, particularly in the XVII century, that they were exempt from customs duties.
Baglio del Cristo di Campobello is run by Angelo, Domenico and Carmelo Bonetta, who brought new life to the estate at the start of the new millennium. Their first harvest was in 2007, and the first wines reached the market in 2009. In 2011 the company won the Grand Prix for Best New Winery at the Vini di Sicilia competition.
