About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The Nero d'Avola vineyards lie in the province of Agrigento, mainly on limestone and chalky soils at 250 to 400 metres above sea level. The estate's 30 hectares are south of the town of Campobello di Licata, in a strip 8 kilometres from the coast. Daytime temperatures in the area reach 35–40 °C, and nights are 20–22 °C. Across the estate, Nero d'Avola covers 60% of the vineyard area and Grillo 25%. The remaining 15% carries small amounts of Catarratto, Syrah, Insolia, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay.
Vinification
The bunches are picked at optimal ripeness, placed in small crates and taken to the winery. In 2020 the harvest ran from the last ten days of September into the first day of October. After selection, the berries are destemmed and gently crushed. Fermentation lasts 18 days in stainless-steel vats, with regular pumping over to extract colour and tannins from the skins.
Ageing
The wine spends 14 months in 225-litre French oak barrels from Nevers, Tronçais and Allier, one third of them new. After bottling it rests a further 12 months in the winery's cellars. The 2021 vintage was released in May 2024.
Tasting profile
Elegant and soft, with a style that is both complex and delicate.
Serving and pairing
Let it breathe for 15–20 minutes before serving.
Label / history
"Lu Patri" means "the father" in Sicilian dialect. The name points to the importance of the ancient native Nero d'Avola grape and to a deep connection with the land and Sicilian traditions. The wine has been produced since 2009.
Baglio del Cristo di Campobello is run by Angelo, Domenico and Carmelo Bonetta, who revived the estate at the turn of the millennium. Their first harvest was in 2007, and the first wines reached the market in 2009. In 2011 the winery received the Grand Prix for Best New Winery at the Vini di Sicilia competition.
