About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The grapes grow in Valtellina, Lombardy, close to the Swiss border, at elevations of 380–700 m. The vineyards are mostly south-facing, on rocky terraces in the lower Rhaetian Alps. Valtellina is a deep Alpine valley following the Adda River from east to west, between Bormio and the northern tip of Lake Como.
Grapes
Nebbiolo is known locally as Chiavennasca, a name derived from the town of Chiavenna.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand at optimum ripeness. Fermentation begins naturally in stainless-steel vats, followed by maceration for up to 20 days.
Ageing
The wine matures for eight months in stainless-steel vats.
Tasting profile
In Valtellina, Nebbiolo produces rounder, more tannic wines than in Piedmont.
