About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The fruit comes from old vines in the Carmignano production area, planted at 200 m above sea level with south-to-southwest exposure. Clay-shale soils characterize the site. The selected 2020 technical sheet records vine ages of 28–40 years.
Grapes
Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah; current proportions are not specified. The original blend contained Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, with Syrah introduced later to increase aromatic complexity. The first vintage was 1979, arising from the work of Ugo and Vittorio Contini Bonacossi.
Vinification
For the 2020 vintage, Merlot and Syrah were harvested at the beginning of September and Cabernet Sauvignon at the beginning of October. Fermentation lasted seven days in stainless-steel tanks at 26–28°C, followed by 13 days of skin maceration before racking. Malolactic fermentation took place in French oak barriques.
Ageing
The wine matures for 18 months in barriques and then for approximately 12 months in bottle; the 2020 sheet specifies a minimum of 12 months in bottle.
Technical data
The current 2021 presentation reports 9,800 bottles. The 2020 technical sheet gives 14.5% alcohol and a production of 9,947 bottles in 0.75 L, 584 magnums, 80 bottles of 3 L, 28 bottles of 6 L and five bottles of 12 L.
Tasting profile
An intensely deep, almost impenetrable ruby red. The broad, complex and refined bouquet is sweet and fruity, with pronounced spicy notes. The palate is smooth, full-bodied and opulent, supported by dense, sweet tannins and balanced acidity. Its generous texture leads to a long, persistent finish in which wild red berries meet intense spice.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 18–19°C. Pair with red meats, roasts, braised dishes, game and mature hard cheeses.
Label / history
Created from the passion of Ugo and Vittorio Contini Bonacossi, the wine was first produced in 1979.
