About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The grapes come from vineyards managed by the estate in Gallura, in the north of Sardinia. Capichera works more than 50 hectares in the north of the island, on firm granite soils mixed with sandy rock. The vines are adapted to summer heat, a harsh climate and strong winds. The estate also has a small plot of old Vermentino vines in the south of the island.
Vinification
The Vermentino is harvested in late August and early September. After gentle pressing, the must ferments in stainless steel tanks, which preserves the varietal character of the grape. At Capichera the winery, built in 2001, ferments in stainless steel and the whole process is computer-controlled.
Ageing
The wine ages in stainless steel tanks, which keeps it fresh, aromatic and lively.
Tasting profile
Expressive aroma and a rich, mineral character.
Serving and pairing
Pairs with sea bass fillet or fish tartare, and suits an appetizer buffet.
Label / history
In the Gallurese dialect "Vign'angena" means "someone else's vineyard". The name refers to grapes from vineyards managed by the estate. These grapes were used for this wine from the start, before the estate's own new vineyards came into production. The wine was first made in 1994.
The Ragnedda family's grandfather bought land near Arzachena at the beginning of the 20th century, and the family made wine there for its own use. Mario and Fabrizio Ragnedda began commercial production in the 1970s. The first wine under the Capichera name was released in 1981, from the 1980 vintage, which showed a tropical fruit aroma, a rich taste and excellent acidity. The estate now makes five white wines from Vermentino and three reds from Carignano, with annual production of at least 300,000 bottles. It uses only native varieties. Its wines come from its own harvest plus some grapes bought from neighbouring growers.
