About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The grapes come from several Castello Banfi vineyard sites on the southern slopes of Montalcino. Cabernet Sauvignon grows at 130 metres on limestone soils with scattered pebbles. Sangiovese is planted at 230 metres on limestone soils over a sandy subsoil. Syrah grows at 120 metres on limestone and clay soils.
Vinification
Harvest begins in early September, with each variety vinified separately. The grapes undergo two days of cold maceration at 14 °C. The temperature is then raised to 24–26 °C, reaching 32 °C during the final days of fermentation. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks, followed by malolactic fermentation in French barriques.
Ageing
Each cuvée ages separately for the first year in French barriques made from Allier, Tronçais and Nevers oak, one-third of them new. After blending, the wine spends a further 11 months in oak barrels and at least six months in bottle.
Tasting profile
Spicy, with a rich fruit aroma and an inviting palate.
