About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The 2023 technical sheet identifies the source as the Concerto vineyard at 350 m in Fonterutoli, Castellina in Chianti. The vines were 19 years old, planted at 5,600–7,500 vines per hectare and trained to spur cordon and Guyot. The rocky soil derives from decomposed limestone and sandstone.
The vineyard narrative distinguishes the varieties more precisely. Sangiovese comes from Scassi, at about 350 m, a rocky, limestone-rich site planted with massal selections originating in an experimental vineyard from the 1930s. Cabernet Sauvignon comes from the small Brotine vineyard, identified in the current product data at 340 m and surrounded by oak woodland. Brotine was selected for its particular microclimate and rocky, limestone-rich soil.
Grapes
80% Sangiovese and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon.
Vinification
The 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon was picked by hand on 15 September, while Sangiovese harvesting began on 28 September. Fermentation was conducted at 26–28°C, with 14–18 days of maceration.
Ageing
The wine matured for 18 months in small French oak vessels: tonneaux for Sangiovese and barriques for Cabernet Sauvignon. It then spent three months in concrete tanks. Bottling took place in June 2025, with release in October 2025.
Technical data
The 2023 has 14.50% alcohol and total acidity of 5.80‰. Production totalled 29,300 bottles. Formats extend from 375 ml to 18 L and are packed in wooden cases.
Tasting profile
Rich and juicy, combining underbrush and black-berry notes with a finish that is both powerful and refined.
Vintage notes
The 2023 season opened with a mild winter and little rain. Spring was rainy and initially cool before temperatures rose rapidly, supporting steady vegetative growth. Budbreak began around 10 April and flowering on 1 June. Rain ceased and temperatures increased during summer, thickening the skins and increasing berry volume. Close monitoring and timely work following the wet spring resulted in high-quality fruit and wines with character. The broader estate harvest ran from 11 September to 13 October, with reported rainfall between 597.7 and 1,203.8 mm. The vintage was rated good.
Label / history
Concerto was created in 1981 during a period of experimentation with new training methods, blends and non-native varieties. It was among the early group of wines associated with the Super Tuscan movement. The first vintage comprised only 15 barriques and matured for 18 months in Fonterutoli's historic cellars. Carla Mazzei chose the name after the first tasting: the balance between the two varieties suggested the harmony of a symphonic ensemble.
