About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

Fonterutoli draws on seven estate vineyard sites around Fonterutoli in Castellina in Chianti. The parcels extend from 220 to 570 m above sea level and encompass a diverse range of soils and mesoclimates. Soils are varied and complex, with limestone and marl predominating. The vines are 19–39 years old, trained to spur cordon and Guyot, and planted at 4,500–7,500 vines per hectare.

Grapes

90% Sangiovese, 5% Malvasia Nera and 5% Colorino.

Vinification

The different estate parcels are vinified separately. The 2024 harvest was picked by hand from 23 September. Fermentation took place at 26–28°C, followed by 16–18 days of maceration.

Ageing

The wine matured for 12 months in 225 L and 500 L French oak barrels, followed by 30–45 days of finishing in concrete tanks. Bottling was scheduled for July 2026 and release for September 2026.

Technical data

Alcohol: 12.84% vol. Total acidity: 5.34%. Production: 230,000 bottles. Formats: 375 ml, 750 ml, 1.5 L, 3 L and 6 L. The first vintage dates to the beginning of the twentieth century.

Tasting profile

A balanced, elegant body with dark-berry and fresh-spice notes. The palate is intense and smooth. The 2024 expression combines vibrant acidity, fine tannins and pure fruit with a more moderate alcohol level than recent vintages.

Serving and pairing

Pairs with pasta in dark sauces, barbecue, boiled meats served with spicy sauces and aged cheeses. Ageing potential is approximately 15 years.

Vintage notes

The 2024 season featured a fairly mild winter with rainfall close to seasonal averages. Spring was wetter than average, followed by a sharp rise in temperature toward summer. Budbreak occurred around 29 March, slightly earlier than in 2023. Flowering began modestly and advanced as temperatures rose; sometimes-heavy rainfall supported canopy growth and fruit set. Summer then became hot and dry, conditions managed through developed vine walls and careful soil work. Strict selection during harvest produced healthy, high-quality fruit from a complex season. The estate harvest ran from 23 September to 16 October. Rainfall from 1 January to 16 October ranged from 712.40 to 960.50 mm, with recorded temperatures from −0.5°C on 21 January to 38.1°C on 12 August. The vintage was evaluated as good.
