About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

The detailed production description places the vineyards in Salarco, within Montepulciano. The vines are 7–20 years old and grow at 300–400 metres above sea level on Pliocene-origin clay with south-eastern exposure. Training is on a vertical trellis with spur-pruned cordons, at 4,000 vines per hectare. The English product page instead names Mulinvecchio as the vineyard.

Grapes

80% Prugnolo Gentile, 10% Canaiolo Nero and 10% Colorino. Prugnolo Gentile is the local name for Sangiovese.

Vinification

Harvest begins during the first ten days of October. The grapes are destemmed, and the must is inoculated with selected yeasts. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in steel and concrete vats for approximately 12 days at 26–28°C. Skin maceration lasts for the same period, with daily pump-overs. After racking, malolactic fermentation occurs in steel.

Ageing

The detailed production method gives eight months in 10–25 hl French oak barrels, two months of settling in steel, then 2–3 months in bottle before release. The English product page gives a substantially longer regimen of 24 months in wood and 6–8 months in bottle, while listing 20 hl oak barrels.

Technical data

Annual production is approximately 18,000–20,000 bottles.

Tasting profile

A fresh, fruity and floral red, intended to be ready for drinking about one year after harvest.

Serving and pairing

Its youthful profile is presented as suitable for a broad range of dishes.
