About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

The fruit comes from two vineyards in Verduno. Massara lies at 240 metres and covers 1.24 hectares: cadastral map sheet X, parcels 137p, 197p and 200p, planted respectively in 1988, 1972 and 2001. Olmo lies at 340 metres and covers 0.3715 hectares: map sheet VIII, parcels 299p, 303p and 345, planted in 1989. Both sites face south-east, on predominantly white soils rich in limestone and clay.

Grapes

100% Pelaverga piccolo, a variety native to Verduno.

Vinification

The 2013 crop was harvested by hand on 3 October. Only the best bunches were selected and placed in small perforated crates. Maceration lasted 10 days in stainless-steel tanks, with periodic manual punch-downs.

The wine was bottled without filtration on 18 June 2014 under lot L14-03B.

Ageing

Eight months in stainless-steel tanks, followed by three months in horizontally stored bottles before release.

Technical data

The 2013 wine has 13.5% alcohol, total acidity of 5.3 g/L and a pH of 3.41. Production comprised 19,870 Albeisa bottles of 0.75 L and 374 half-bottles of 0.375 L.

Tasting profile

Intense and fragrant, with black pepper and nutmeg alongside fruit recalling strawberries and cherries preserved in alcohol. The palate is balanced, dry and persistent.

Vintage notes

The 2013 growing season began with a slow spring and below-average temperatures in March and April. Conditions improved gradually during June, and July brought greater weather stability that benefited vine development. Flowering proceeded regularly in the second half of June and was followed by good fruit set. After the difficult first part of the season, calm conditions in September and October allowed the vines to recover, delayed the harvest and produced satisfying results.

Label / history

“Basadone” is the local name for the poppy and can also mean a kiss. Local tradition attributes aphrodisiac qualities to the wine.
