About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The Pelaverga piccolo comes from two vineyards in Verduno. Massara covers 1.24 ha at 240 m and comprises parcels planted in 1972, 1988 and 2001. Olmo covers 0.3715 ha at 340 m, with parcels planted in 1989. Both sites face south-east. Their predominantly white soils are calcareous and clay-rich.
Grapes
100% Pelaverga piccolo, an indigenous variety of Verduno.
Vinification
For the 2013 vintage, the grapes were harvested by hand on 3 October and placed in small perforated crates, with only the best bunches retained. Maceration lasted 10 days in stainless steel, accompanied by periodic manual punch-downs.
Ageing
The wine matured for eight months in stainless-steel tanks, followed by three months in horizontally stored bottles before release. It was bottled without filtration on 18 June 2014 under lot L14-03B.
Technical data
The 2013 has 13.5% alcohol, total acidity of 5.3 g/L and a pH of 3.41. Production comprised 19,870 bottles of 0.75 L and 374 bottles of 0.375 L.
Tasting profile
An intense, fragrant nose combines black pepper and nutmeg with fruit recalling strawberries and cherries preserved in alcohol. The palate is dry, balanced and persistent.
Vintage notes
The 2013 growing season began with a slow spring and below-average temperatures in March and April. Conditions improved progressively in June, while July brought greater weather stability and favourable conditions for the vines. Regular flowering in the second half of June was followed by good fruit set. Calm weather in September and October allowed harvest to be delayed and the fruit to reach satisfactory maturity.
Label / history
Basadone is the local name for the poppy and can also mean a kiss. Local tradition regards the wine as an aphrodisiac associated with awakening desire.
