About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The grapes grow in the coastal areas of Marsala and in the province of Trapani. The vineyards lie above 300 m on dry, low-yielding red soils rich in sandstone. Vines are traditionally trained as small trees and planted at a density of at least 5,000 vines per hectare. The island climate brings mild winters and very hot, dry summers.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand in the second half of September. The high-sugar berries are gently pressed using a special method intended to preserve components from the skins. Fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature, followed by the addition of fortified must, concentrated wine and brandy.
Ageing
The wine ages for at least 30 months in oak barrels of different sizes, followed by at least three months in bottle in a cool room.
Label / history
The first vintage was produced in 1915. The wine is made in the historic cellars of the Florio family.
